Announcing the MomentBooks imprint at
Mandel Vilar Press
Nadine Epstein, Editor-in-Chief of Moment Magazine, an independent magazine that provides wide-ranging perspectives on the political, cultural and social issues facing the Jewish community, and Robert Mandel, Publisher of Mandel Vilar Press, an independent publisher established four years ago to serve as a conduit of multicultural exchange and a crucial channel for advancing diversity in publishing, announced the creation of a new imprint, MomentBooks. MomentBooks will publish creative written and visual fiction and nonfiction that inspire and enlighten readers.
“Moment Magazine and Mandel Vilar Press are thrilled to launch the MomentBooks imprint—a marriage of publishing wisdom and fresh, creative voices and ideas,” said Nadine Epstein.
“The establishment and launch of MomentBooks is a great union between two active and creative nonprofits who have the same long-term goal of publishing the best Jewish writers and writings on the most important cultural, literary, intellectual, political and social issues facing the American and worldwide Jewish community,” added Robert Mandel.
MomentBook’s inaugural title is ELIE WIESEL: An Extraordinary Life and Legacy –Writings, Reflections, Photographs, edited by Nadine Epstein, an award-winning journalist and author and Editor-in-Chief and CEO of Moment Magazine (Trade Paperback Original; April 2, 2019; $35; ISBN 978-1942134572). In this striking volume, Epstein shares her memories of Wiesel and brings together 36 reflections from friends, colleagues, and others who knew him—including his son Elisha Wiesel, Michael Berenbaum, Wolf Blitzer, Father Patrick Desbois, Ben Kingsley, Ronald S. Lauder, Bernard-Henri Levy, Kati Marton, Itzhak Perlman, Natan Sharansky, Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, Oprah Winfrey and Ruth Wisse. The foreword is by world famous British Rabbi Jonathan Sacks and the Afterword is by acclaimed broadcaster Ted Koppel and it includes more than 100 photographs.
MomentBooks plans two releases in Fall 2019. In September, Bob Mankoff, Cartoon and Humor Editor for Esquire and former New Yorker Cartoon Editor, collects his favorite Jewish cartoons in HAVE I GOT A CARTOON FOR YOU! The Moment Magazine Book of Jewish Cartoons (Trade Paperback Original; September 17, 2019; $19.95; ISBN 978-19421345968). Mankoff grew up Jewish in Queens, NY, went to the Borscht Belt as a kid where he saw performances by Jerry Lewis, Buddy Hackett and Rodney Dangerfield, among others. In this new collection, he presents his favorite Jewish cartoons and writes the introduction. The book features a foreword by the award-winning New Yorker cartoonist Roz Chast.
Just in time for Hanukkah 2019, MomentBooks will release THE CITY OF LIGHT by Theodore Bikel with Aimee Ginsburg Bikel, illustrated by Noah Phillips (Trade Hardcover Original; November 5, 2019; $14.95; ISBN 978-1942134619). The beloved late movie actor, folk singer, musician, composer, unionist, and political activist poignantly recounts moments from his childhood in Vienna, when he experienced and witnessed anti-Semitism as Nazi influence grew—and dreamed of a Jewish superhero, Judah Maccabee who could rescue the Jews. The book is based on a story commissioned by Moment Editor-in-Chief Nadine Epstein that was published in the magazine and read aloud on NPR’s Hanukkah Lights program in 2014.
